Rajat Patidar has been appointed as the new captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The announcement was made by the RCB management during a function in Bangalore. Patidar, who has been a key player for RCB, was chosen over other contenders such as Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Jitesh Sharma, all of whom have leadership experience in domestic cricket. Notably, Virat Kohli was offered the captaincy but declined, adhering to his decision from four seasons ago to step down from leadership roles.
Patidar’s recent performances have been impressive at the domestic cricket. He captained Madhya Pradesh to the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024-25, showcasing his leadership qualities. Last season, after missing 2023 due to injury, he scored 395 runs at a striking rate of 177.13, including five half-centuries.
Upon his appointment, Patidar was super happy. “Yes, definitely. RCB is a big franchise, and I love playing for RCB. So, it (retention) gave me a lot of confidence that they retained me,” he said.
