Rohit Sharma has allegedly accused former skipper and renowned commentator for decades, Sunil Gavaskar, of being “too negative”about the current India captain’s recent form in Australia and even complained
to the BCCI during one of the meetings he had with the top brass of the Indian board, sources told CricBlogger.
Gavaskar has always been known for his forthright opinions, often voicing concerns about players’ performances. While his intent may be constructive criticism, it can sometimes be perceived as harsh, particularly by players under intense scrutiny, like Rohit.
“The skipper, Rohit Sharma, was out of his depth and having taken the brave decision to step aside, because of his form, he has also raised big questions about his future in Test cricket,” Gavaskar had written in his column in The Sydney Morning Herald. On air too, Gavaskar said that Rohit Sharma would step down “if he doesn’t score runs in Melbourne and Sydney and he won’t wait for the selectors to make that call”.
Rohit raising this matter with BCCI officials, indicates his discomfort with external pressure impacting his focus. Rohit has been struggling with the bat during recent times and Gavaskar’s critical outlook has disturbed the Indian captain. “Rohit felt that it was not necesssy for Gavaskar to criticise him in that fashion and that’s why he complained to the BCCI about Gavaskar,” a source said.
None of the board officials were available to comment. This is not the first time that Gavaskar has criticised big stars of Indian cricket. Time and again, he has been vocal against Virat Kohli and was even heard calling Rishabh Pant’s carefree batting as “stupid”.
Like India coach Gautam Gambhir, Gavaskar had also said Jasprit Bumrah should captain India in the Australian series after Rohit had missed the opening Test match in Perth, as he was on paternity leave. “All these added so much pressure that he was compelled to tell it all to BCCI,” the source added.
