Between 2019 and 2023, there were four ICC events, out of which India were in a position of strength in the 2019 ICC 50-over World Cup and 2023 ICC World Cup at home. Even in the 2022 T20 World Cup, India did well to play the semifinals which they lost to England. Incidentally, in all these four ICC events that have seen India at least doing well, Indian captain Rohit Sharma played a huge role in them.
The 2019 World Cup in England, Rohit scored five centuries and in the 2021 T20 World Cup under Virat Kohli he didn’t do badly. Then, he took the reigns of India’s white ball cricket and became the ultimate Hitman, as he is known in the circuit. The 2023 World Cup at home is the best-case example to see how Rohit’s team did so well to win the hearts of the millions despite not winning the tournament. The trust factor has carried him so well that he is again getting a chance to rewrite history.
For nearly 11 years, India haven’t won an ICC event and all eyes are on Rohit to do the magic and he is again getting what he wants like it happened before the 2023 World Cup. But there is something that Rohit needs to change before he gets going in the ICC event right after IPL. Like all other Indian captains, Rohit is futuristic but he is very obstinate when it comes to backing his choice of players. If he wants a particular set of players, he doesn’t like to be challenged. This is also the trait that cost him Mumbai Indians captaincy.
Let’s say, if Rohit can’t win an IPL title for three years, he will straight away blame the management for not giving him the right kind of players, which in reality might have happened. Otherwise, Rohit would have been captaining Mumbai today, right? A captain should always get a team of his choice, but as some of the great Indian captains, Rohit too has his inhibitions. He always puts a straight face. At times, he has annoyed the high and the mighty. Of course, the Indian captain has to be the man of his own words, but got to be flexible as well. Perhaps, this T20 World Cup is his last chance to take India home and taking the right calls will only help the country’s cause!
