Another key element behind India’s recent batting success has come to light. Following CricBlogger’s report on the top-order batters’ intent to play on the front foot, former selector and ex-BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale has highlighted the importance of their ‘trigger movement’ — which enables them to get quickly onto the front foot and counter swing and seam effectively.
“Look at the way Shubman Gill is using his trigger movement. Because of this, he’s able to transition so smoothly onto the front foot and play those elegant cover drives. Even his back lift has improved so much and it is coming between first and second slip cordon. It has helped him in his front foot positioning.,” Jagdale said.
“And it’s not just Gill. Even the likes of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal are doing the same.”
While the back foot often presents more opportunities for attacking strokes — leading many to believe that mastering back-foot play is crucial — India’s top-order batters are showing commendable patience in committing to the front foot and executing their scoring shots with precision.
Jagdale finds it particularly encouraging that a proven match-winner like Rishabh Pant is also adapting, showcasing his class with confident front-foot play.
“How many can score a hundred on their first tour of England?” Jagdale asked. “Sachin Tendulkar did it, and Rishabh Pant did it in 2018 — he should have been part of the 2019 World Cup squad. He’s a special talent. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored a century on his first tour to England.”
Jagdale also reiterated that a player’s true legacy is defined by the number of Test matches he plays, not performances in other formats. “Test cricket is real cricket, and I’m glad to see so much excitement building around the upcoming Lord’s Test,” he added.

Well not a very technical person on the trigger movement but what I understand is that it helps in covering the line of the ball and also bringing your body behind or closer to your whole structure in having more control while playing forward and coming on towards the ball .It’s like when you are hungry the food tastes better .so when success comes all these small technical things also are attributes of it .having said that when one is out of form abd you don’t get runs it’s because all the elements of temperament technique talent and training are not in sync .let’s hope we keep getting better and win this series which will help us in building a good team with confidence for the future
How and when was this triggering adopted by the Indian batsmen…who should be credited for it
Good to see indian batters delivering in the series so far. Real challenge is expected to begin in Lord’s. Hope they continue the good show with the bat.
