India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav was not in favour of Shubman Gill’s inclusion in the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, sources told CricBlogger. It is learnt that Suryakumar had expressed strong reservations about Gill’s place in India’s current T20 setup and even refrained from recommending him as his deputy.
According to sources, Suryakumar tried to convince the selectors and other key decision-makers that Gill’s style of play does not align with the team’s present T20 plans. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the national selectors thought otherwise and backed Gill based on his consistency and long-term potential.
In the end, Suryakumar’s views were overruled. Just minutes before the official team announcement, he was informed that Gill had been included in the squad — a decision that left him surprised.
None of BCCI office-bearers were available for comment.
Later, Suryakumar welcomed Gill’s inclusion in the team, calling it a positive step for the future. Several former stars also echoed his view, describing the move as a forward-looking decision for India’s T20 setup.
It has now come to light that Gill is being groomed to take over as India’s captain across all formats in the near future. At least, the selectors are believed to be moving firmly in that direction, sources said.
