Days after GMR, the co-owner of the Delhi Capitals, floated the idea of running the team for three years instead of the current two-year arrangement, JSW Sports — whose turn it is to run the franchise for the next two years — is not ready to commit to the proposal yet.
Just because it is their turn to manage the team affairs, the JSW group is not willing to make the three-year arrangement a rule immediately. They want to first take control of the franchise and then take a call on the matter, sources told CricBlogger.
The ongoing operating cycle, if extended to three years as proposed by GMR, could also align with the IPL’s three-year mega auction cycle. However, if JSW Sports does not agree to the proposal, it could lead to a clash with the mega auction cycle, with two sets of owners effectively working in different directions while chasing the same goal.
When CricBlogger reached out to both groups, neither was willing to comment on the matter.
There is also a growing sentiment that whenever the Delhi Capitals perform well in the IPL, it is usually during the years when JSW Sports is in charge of running the franchise. Ideally, both ownership groups should collectively run the affairs of the Delhi Capitals, as is the case with most other teams. Perhaps too much individuality in decision-making is creating confusion and, in turn, affecting the smooth functioning of the franchise.
That’s why Delhi’s performances have not been consistent enough, and despite being one of the original eight IPL franchises, the Delhi Capitals could find themselves on shaky ground.
