Years ago, former Indian opener and Bengal coach Arun Lal had remarked that if he had to pick one player ahead of everyone else for a tournament as big as the IPL, it would be Bengal all-rounder Shahbaz.
That assessment now appears increasingly justified, especially after the way Shahbaz led Shrachi Rarh Tigers to their maiden Bengal T20 Championship. A side that had spent most of the previous two seasons languishing near the bottom of the table was transformed under his leadership, underlining not only his all-round abilities but also his growing credentials as a captain.
