After CricBlogger reported that former captain MS Dhoni had recommended Hardik Pandya’s name to the franchise, it is now emerging that Chennai Super Kings is the all-rounder’s preferred destination among the three teams that have approached him.
With Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals all showing very keen interest in Hardik, sources indicate that CSK is his first choice because of the freedom the franchise offers its players.
Unlike Mumbai Indians, where the captain is expected to sit through long strategy meetings before every match, Hardik is believed to be attracted to the culture established by Dhoni at CSK. The franchise is known for keeping meetings to a minimum, with Dhoni preferring a simple pre-match huddle over marathon discussions. That relaxed, player-first environment is understood to be a major reason why Hardik is keen on a move to Chennai.
Sources said Hardik enjoyed tremendous success with Gujarat Titans because the franchise gave him complete freedom to run the team the way he wanted.
“That’s why Shubman Gill has also been able to thrive at the franchise,” a source said.
With Mumbai Indians holding the right to approve any trade, it remains to be seen whether the franchise’s owners will sanction a move, especially given the age-old rivalry with Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai are understood to be keen on retaining Hardik the player, even if not as captain, but the star all-rounder is in no mood to continue with the franchise.
Internally, Mumbai Indians are also aware that whichever team Hardik joins will instantly become a stronger contender, making any decision on his future even more significant.
Sources also said that among the teams looking to acquire Hardik through a trade with Mumbai Indians— Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals— all three could be prepared to offer the star all-rounder the captaincy.
With Hardik believed to be seeking a fresh start, the opportunity to lead a new franchise, coupled with the freedom to run the team in his own way, could prove decisive in determining his next destination. The coming weeks are expected to reveal whether Mumbai Indians are willing to approve what could become one of the biggest trades in IPL history.
