The story of Delhi cricket: Plenty of talent, precious little performance

Hours before dusk, my phone rang several times. The reason was Delhi’s defeat to Bengal in their Ranji Trophy opener. Several journalists wanted to know why Delhi looked so vulnerable. How could a team brimming with potential and boasting as many as 16 IPL talents struggle so badly in red-ball cricket?

Isn’t potential without performance a big zero?

The most frustrating part is that the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has left no stone unturned in backing a team packed with players expected to shape the future of Delhi cricket. Yet, such a humiliating defeat against Bengal, particularly at the start of Durga Puja, raises an uncomfortable question: was Delhi ever prepared for the challenge Bengal posed?

Meanwhile, cricket followers in Bengal are wondering what has gone wrong with Delhi cricket in the longest format. Had this been a white-ball contest, Bengal might well have found it difficult to get the better of Delhi. But red-ball cricket is an entirely different ball game. When the ball swings, seams and spins, Delhi seem to be all at sea.

Talent may earn you headlines, and IPL contracts may promise a bright future, but neither can substitute for the temperament, technique and discipline that red-ball cricket demands. For Delhi, the gap between potential and performance remains glaringly wide.

For those who aren’t well-versed in Delhi cricket, it is worth understanding that many first-class cricketers tend to chase individual milestones rather than function as a cohesive unit—and Delhi is no exception. Too many players appear more concerned about their personal performances than the team’s cause. The emphasis seems to be on scoring individual runs and taking wickets for personal glory rather than doing whatever it takes to win matches.

Even more worrying is that some players still appear unclear about their roles in the team. The Delhi sides of the 1980s and 1990s played with a different mindset, driven by a collective desire to win matches for their state. The approach of the current crop, however, seems markedly different.

If Delhi opener Sarthak Ranjan is known for his aggressive stroke play, as he has demonstrated in the past, why did he resort to a defensive approach? Similarly, Ayush Doseja, the highest run-scorer in the previous Ranji Trophy season, has the patience to bat for long periods on placid tracks. However, he still needs to learn how to negotiate double-paced wickets. And wicketkeeper-batter Anuj Rawat’s dismissal while attempting a reverse sweep in the second innings certainly warrants serious scrutiny. Such a shot, in that situation, raises questions about shot selection and game awareness.

If Delhi captain Ayush Badoni can make batting look like a walk in the park against a quality Bengal pace attack led by Mohammed Shami, what can one expect from the rest of the team?

More alarmingly, Delhi appear to lack the bowling firepower to take all 20 wickets required to win a first-class match. If Badoni, primarily a batter, is among the bowlers making an impact with a five-wicket haul, it should serve as a wake-up call. Delhi need to put their house in order—without resorting to a blame game.

Such a start to the season, right in the opening game, is certainly cause for concern. The batters will eventually find their rhythm, but that alone will not be enough. Red-ball cricket demands a complete team effort, with batters building innings, bowlers taking wickets and every player understanding his role.

The bigger question remains: who will step up and take those crucial 20 wickets to help Delhi bounce back strongly in their next home game? For a team blessed with so much talent, finding the answer should be the immediate priority.
