The BCCI has barred coach Gautam Gambhir’s personal assistant (PA) from travelling with the Indian team We’re used to hearing about team managers, who handle logistics, and players’ managers, who deal with endorsements and contracts, but a coach having a personal manager raises questions. At least, it has happened in the BCCI. Days after a complaint was made about Gambhir’s manager Gaurav Arora having access to areas meant only for team officials, selectors, and players, Arora is being banned from travelling with the team, BCCI sources told CricBlogger.
A section in the BCCI believes that Arora’s presence could blur professional boundaries, which is probably why the BCCI stepped in. A head coach already has direct communication with the board and team management, so why would he need a separate manager traveling with the team? It feels like a grey area—was this person handling media relations for Gambhir, or was there more to it? Either way, the BCCI seems to be cracking down on any unnecessary entourages.
Sources said that board had almost given a green signal for Arora being with Gambhir for all India matches. Sources said that protest from other office-bearers halted the move, leaving Gambhir red-faced. Earlier, Arora had accessed areas typically reserved for team members and officials, such as the selectors’ car, the BCCI’s hospitality box in Adelaide, and restricted breakfast zones in team hotels.
“In response, the BCCI has barred Gambhir’s PA from staying in the same hotel as the Indian team, accessing VIP boxes in stadiums, and using the team bus. He can’t travel with the team,” the source said . This move is part of a broader initiative by the BCCI to regulate the presence of personal staff and family members during tours. The board has reintroduced a policy limiting the duration that family members can accompany players on tours.
