It was the inauguration of the Under-13 and Under-15 intra-state cricket tournament, held at the Gear and High Court grounds, starting precisely at 9 a.m. Cricket Association of Bengal president, Shehasish Ganguly, made a timely appearance at the venue. When reminded about his punctuality, he responded with a straightforward, “I don’t like being late.” As the event kicked off, two teams were lined up at each venue, and the conversation quickly turned to young talent, specifically Yashasvi Jaiswal. The discussion focused on how Bengal cricket could produce similar players, highlighting the potential for emerging stars from the region.

In his address, Ganguly emphasized how young cricketers could truly capitalize on the opportunity presented by the association. He spoke passionately about how such tournaments are a stepping stone for budding talent, encouraging the players to put in their best effort and make the most of the platform provided to them. His words resonated with the importance of nurturing skills at a young age, reminding everyone that the pathway to success in cricket often begins with such grassroots initiatives.

One notable step towards enhancing the tournament experience was the introduction of the SG Super Red ball, crafted by the renowned cricket equipment manufacturer Sanspareils Greenlands (SG) based in Meerut. The way Junior Cricket Committee Chairman Sanjay Das presented this initiative spoke volumes about the Cricket Association of Bengal’s commitment to the game. By using top-quality equipment like the SG Super Red ball, the association not only raised the standards of the tournament but also showed its dedication to providing young cricketers with the best tools to hone their skills and develop their game at the highest level.

The most compelling part of the story, however, lies in CAB’s overarching goal — to produce Test cricketers from the region. The recent success of pacers like Mohammed Shami, Mukesh Kumar, and Akash Deep is a testament to the association’s growing influence and commitment. These players are already making significant contributions to Indian cricket, particularly in the Test format. The potential for more such cricketers to emerge from Bengal remains high, and with the CAB’s ongoing focus on nurturing talent, who knows how many more could follow in their footsteps. This vision to produce world-class cricketers is not just about the present, but also about building a legacy for the future.

Unlike Delhi, where corporate cricket has a significant presence, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has maintained a strong focus on its own tournaments, specifically for junior and club cricket within the city and its surroundings. This approach reflects a deep sense of seriousness and commitment towards the development of the game. CAB ensures that players receive top-notch facilities, from quality training grounds to providing sumptuous meals, making the entire experience more professional. The association’s 94-odd clubs and other affiliates play a crucial role in supporting these initiatives, ensuring that the grassroots level of the sport is well taken care of. This holistic approach fosters both player development and the overall growth of Bengal cricket.

Interestingly, Bengal has no shortage of cricketing talent, with skills abundant across the state. The primary challenge, however, used to be the limited space available for playing — small fields that didn’t offer the ideal environment for nurturing top-level cricketers. But this issue has been addressed effectively. The top clubs affiliated with the CAB now ensure that their matches are played on large, proper grounds, while junior players continue to be groomed in smaller venues. This tiered approach allows for both skill development and an understanding of different playing conditions.

What stands out is the strong cricketing culture in the state, driven by the intent of former cricketers like Shehasish Ganguly and Sanjay Das — who a teammate of legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. Their experience, combined with their vision, is helping take Bengal cricket to new heights, positioning the state as a burgeoning cricketing hub. Their commitment to creating the right environment for future stars reflects a growing ambition to make Bengal a premier cricket destination in India.
