An errant cricketer went on the rampage recently at one of the IPL venues. As per the rule laid down by BCCI, all IPL teams are allowed to hone their match simulation skills only a day before the match. But an IPL player kept insisting on using the pitches next to the main square. When he was told about the rule, he wasn’t ready to accept it and even argued with the association officials.
Deprived of not being allowed to use the pitch near the main square, the player went and showed his ire by smashing a water dispenser, which was placed next to the pitch for watering the pitch. This incident upset the association officials so much that they had to lodge an official complaint with the BCCI. Reacting to the notice issued by the BCCI to the franchise, the team owners had to tender a written apology to diffuse the situation.
“This is extremely degrading for us to see the way some of the players are behaving on and off. Some one needs to tell them that they have to abide by the rules and regulations of BCCI. If the curators are following protocols, the players also need to follow them diligently,” a source told CricBlogger.
This incident has left such a bad taste in the mouth that some of the stakeholders are wondering what is the way out to tackle such behaviour in the future. Not that this kind of incident is the first of its kind. It has been repeated again and again. Some players were also caught breaking furniture and glass doors and windows inside the dressing room to vent out their frustration.
In the past, a few top Indian cricketers were also penalized for showing disgust at cricket equipment and even fined for dissent in public spaces as well. The time has come to put a full stop to it. Every day can’t be your day, the players need to respect the elements surrounding the game and it is only then they will be respected!
