In a move similar to pacer Akash Deep — who missed the West Indies tour due to injury and had to feature in the Irani Cup to prove his fitness — Rishabh Pant is also expected to play the Ranji Trophy for Delhi, subject to fitness clearance at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on Friday, sources told CricBlogger.
Sources said that Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury during the England series, was initially confident of making a comeback for the West Indies series at home. He had been undergoing extensive rehabilitation and fitness drills at the NCA and even showed encouraging signs of recovery. However, despite his determination and steady progress, he could not achieve 100 per cent match fitness in time for the series, leading the selectors and medical staff to delay his return to competitive cricket.
Sources said that the BCCI has made it mandatory for all centrally contracted players returning from injuries to prove their match fitness before donning the Indian colours again. If there are no competitive domestic fixtures available at that time, the board is committed to organising practice matches at the NCA to help assess the players’ readiness. These games allow selectors and the NCA’s medical staff to take a final call on a player’s fitness before considering them for national selection.
