Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and present secretary Jay Shah seem to have had a conversation after a very long time. Years after the former Indian captain was eased out as BCCI boss, this was the only time they spoke at length about Indian cricket.
Sources told CricBlogger that the conversation may have ranged around the next Indian coach or next boss of ICC, but none of the individuals were available to confirm what they discussed in the conference call.
Sources close to Ganguly denied a discussion regarding India’s next coach or next ICC chairmanship.
“The fact both the board officials met means that they must have discussed the current state of Indian cricket,” a source close to the development told CricBlogger.
However, there is speculation that Shah may have taken Ganguly’s opinion on appointing the new coach. Not to forget that Ganguly wrote a cryptic message on his social media account after former India player Gautam Gambhir became the frontrunner to take over as India’s head coach and later supported his name.
Even outgoing coach Rahul Dravid supported Gambhir’s candidature and termed him as a no-nonsense coach.
A few weeks earlier, when CricBlogger had contacted Ganguly to know if he would apply for India’s head coach role, he made it clear that he wouldn’t. How can he?
After becoming the BCCI president, won’t it be demeaning for Ganguly to become the coach of India? With ICC’s chairman’s post up for grabs next year, it remains to be seen if it is Shah or Ganguly who would wear the hat of the ICC boss.
