Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is gradually losing respect in the dressing room. It’s not just the senior players who appear to have issues with his methods; even some of the younger members of the squad are finding it difficult to adjust, sources told CricBlogger.
According to the sources, several current players have been speaking to some of the game’s legends, openly discussing the issues and inconsistencies within the dressing room. The concerns are said to extend beyond Gambhir’s perceived differences with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Sources claim that none of the senior players, including Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, are currently in his good books.
While the atmosphere within the team is described as one of confusion, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not considering replacing Gambhir at this stage. However, some BCCI office-bearers believe that the sanctity of the dressing room is more important than any individual.
With multiple video reports suggesting that Gautam Gambhir is not on the best of terms with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and a few other members of the Indian team, concerns are growing over whether the current environment could affect the team’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Some observers have even drawn comparisons with the atmosphere during Greg Chappell’s tenure as India head coach. There is also speculation in certain quarters that Gambhir’s continued association with the Kolkata Knight Riders could eventually prompt him to step down from the India coaching role on his own.
Adding to the uncertainty is the perception that Gambhir wields unprecedented influence within the dressing room. Several believe this is perhaps the first time an India head coach has been seen as more influential than the team’s captains, a situation that has only added to the unease among some players.
With some of the senior players deciding among themselves that they will not step aside simply because Gautam Gambhir wants things to go his way, the situation could become even more complicated.
CricBlogger has learned from sources that Gambhir is keen on transitioning towards a younger core ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup and is not in favour of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continuing until then. However, several senior players reportedly hold a different view.
“The whole team is behind Ro-Ko, and this shouldn’t become an issue with Gambhir,” a BCCI source said, adding that only the forthcoming review meeting can address the growing concerns and help resolve the situation.
