Some may argue that the Delhi Premier League (DPL) is India’s closest replica of the Indian Premier League (IPL), while others may disagree. But a closer look at the tournament tells its own story.
The similarities are hard to ignore. The DPL has the same broadcaster, the same event management team, and is organised by the same association that hosts the Delhi Capitals’ IPL matches. The commentary panel features many of the familiar voices from the IPL, while the same ground staff prepare the venues and pitches—often for two matches on the same day. The tournament also uses the same cricket balls as the IPL, with experienced IPL match referees officiating the games.
From broadcast production to match operations, the DPL has embraced IPL-level standards, making it one of the most professionally run state T20 leagues in India.
It would hardly come as a surprise if the DPL boasts the highest number of IPL players among all state-run domestic T20 competitions in the country. The presence of international stars, established IPL cricketers and some of India’s finest young talent has significantly elevated the quality of the league.
“Even the standard is exceptionally high. The arrangements, the quality of cricket, and even the pitches are outstanding. Along with the Vidarbha league, this is one of the best state-run T20 leagues in the country,” Ashok Malhotra, former India cricketer and a key member of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, told CricBlogger at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.
That endorsement speaks volumes. Over the years, the DPL has evolved into far more than just another state tournament. With its IPL-like professionalism, world-class infrastructure and participation of several established and emerging IPL stars, it has become a launchpad for young talent and a benchmark for how a state-run T20 league should be organised. Today, the DPL is not merely following the IPL blueprint—it is creating an identity of its own while setting new standards for domestic franchise cricket in India.
It’s not just experts who have taken notice. The fans have responded in impressive numbers as well, with crowds ranging between 4,000 and 8,000 turning up regularly to watch the matches. The growing attendance reflects the tournament’s rising popularity and the quality of cricket on display.
The transformation has been remarkable. Until last year, there were frequent complaints about poor batting application, toothless bowling attacks and sloppy fielding, with dropped catches often undermining the quality of the contest.
This season, however, the story has been entirely different. The standard of cricket has improved significantly, and the praise has been unanimous. With former India cricketer and BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee member Ashok Malhotra describing the DPL as one of the finest state-run T20 leagues in the country, even observers outside Delhi have not held back in applauding the event.
Perhaps the biggest endorsement lies in the fact that Delhi has not been among India’s strongest domestic teams in recent years. Yet the quality of the DPL is now being compared with the country’s finest state T20 competitions. That, more than anything else, suggests that the DDCA has found a winning formula.
The DPL may still be in its infancy, but it has already demonstrated what a professionally managed state league can achieve. If the current trajectory continues, it will not only remain India’s closest thing to the IPL but also become the benchmark against which every other state-run T20 league is measured.y
