Despite certain sections of the BCCI, including India head coach Gautam Gambhir, not being entirely opposed to Ajit Agarkar continuing as chief selector, the former India all-rounder may still have to step down from the selection panel, sources told CricBlogger.
Agarkar is expected to be replaced as the West Zone selector by former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel. His appointment could also put Patel in contention to take over as the next chairman of the senior men’s selection committee by virtue of having played the most matches for India.
“Parthiv Patel is in the race to take over from Agarkar, who won’t be continuing as chief selector,” a BCCI source said.
If Patel does replace Agarkar as the West Zone representative, he could emerge as one of the leading candidates for the chief selector’s position.
An official announcement and the due process for appointing Agarkar’s successor are expected to follow once he formally steps down as chief selector.
Earlier, Agarkar had threatened to resign from the post in the past after being pushed to consider Hardik Pandya over Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain. Despite the reported differences, Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee has generally been regarded as a productive one, with the team achieving significant success during his stint.
