Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s much-discussed exit from Mumbai Indians appears to be hanging by a thread. With franchises such as Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants unwilling to surrender key players in exchange for the star all-rounder, Pandya could now be staring at an increasingly likely stay with the five-time champions.
Although the trade window will remain open even after the mini-auction, Hardik’s exit plan has hit a major roadblock for now.
Sources told CricBlogger that Mumbai Indians were keen to prise Axar Patel away from Delhi Capitals in a blockbuster swap involving Pandya. The franchise also explored a potential deal with Lucknow Super Giants, seeking explosive batter Nicholas Pooran and pacer Mohsin Khan in exchange for their star all-rounder. However, neither of the two franchises was willing to part with their key players, bringing both potential trade deals to a standstill.
However, the trade landscape has rapidly narrowed. Kolkata Knight Riders are understood to have no appetite for releasing any of their players, while Mumbai Indians’ room for a cash-only deal is severely restricted by budget constraints. Adding another twist to the saga, sources also said that Chennai Super Kings head coach Zaheer Khan is not on speaking terms with Pandya. As a result, the prospect of Pandya making a move to CSK appears highly unlikely at this stage.
With one avenue after another seemingly closing, Pandya may now have little choice but to remain at Mumbai Indians. The possibility of him eventually taking the field under Tilak Varma would add an intriguing new chapter to an already dramatic saga.
That said, the situation remains fluid. Sources indicated that the equation could change dramatically if Pandya regains full fitness and rediscovers his imperious form. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are also wary of strengthening a direct rival by handing over a player of Pandya’s calibre — a factor that could ultimately work in favour of retaining him.
For now, the blockbuster trade saga appears to be running out of exits, with Hardik’s future at Mumbai hanging precariously in the balance. His frequent injuries have done little to strengthen his bargaining position or help him command a lucrative deal. Over the past three years, Pandya has secured a ₹100-crore deal with Mumbai Indians and has also been seeking the opportunity to captain an IPL franchise — potentially the team involved in a swap deal.
“Unless a late twist in the trade window changes the equation, the star all-rounder could be set for another chapter in Mumbai Indians colours,” another source added.
