So, Ajit Agarkar is reportedly out as chief selector, and apparently, he isn’t interested in continuing either because of his differences with the establishment over the years. That is what sections of the Indian media are reporting, but the BCCI has yet to provide any real clarity.
And that raises questions.
Just look at Agarkar’s tenure. He was part of the setup through the 2023 World Cup final, the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cup triumphs, the 2025 Champions Trophy victory and two Asia Cup campaigns. What more, exactly, was he supposed to deliver?
More importantly, Agarkar wasn’t simply looking at numbers on a spreadsheet. He backed youngsters and helped bring players such as Dhruv Jurel, Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan into the Test setup. He also identified prospects such as Gunnoor Brar, showing a willingness to look beyond conventional statistics and spot talent before it became obvious to everyone else.
And now there are reports that the BCCI wants him out?
If that is indeed the case, the board owes everyone an explanation.
Because if results, talent identification and the development of the next generation are among the primary responsibilities of a chief selector, what exactly has Agarkar done to justify being pushed aside?
And who comes next? Another former player who spent years trying to force his way back into the Indian team after being dropped multiple times, only to now find himself in line for an opportunity? That would hardly inspire confidence.
There have even been reports that Agarkar wasn’t invited to the review meeting recently held in Mumbai. Then came the rather bizarre explanation that he wasn’t in a good enough internet range to participate in the meeting.
Seriously?
If Agarkar is leaving, say so. If he is staying, say so. And if there are genuine disagreements between him and the establishment, explain what those disagreements are.
Agarkar may or may not continue as chief selector. But after everything that has happened during his tenure, he deserves far more than whispers, leaks and vague explanations.
If Rohit Sharma and a few people within the Mumbai Cricket Association are indeed calling the shots, then this is a deeply troubling story for Indian cricket. Selection decisions should be driven by cricketing judgment, transparency and what is best for the team — not by personal equations.
In the end, Agarkar deserves to serve Indian cricket for at least one more year, especially with the 2027 World Cup just around the corner. Continuity matters, particularly when a selector has already been involved in building the team and identifying the next generation.
Without meaning to criticise, just wanted to know was Agarkar so powerful that he could include sny youngster if he felt he was oromising
