Right after suffering the back injury in the Sydney Test match earlier this month, Bumrah was advised five weeks rest before he would start training and bowling again, sources told CricBlogger. From there on, Bumrah’s recovery process has been closely monitored by the BCCI and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) due to his significance in Indian cricket.
“A back injury, especially for a fast bowler, is always a delicate matter, and the five-week rest period followed by gradual training and bowling is a standard protocol for rehabilitation,” a BCCI source told CricBlogger.
Considering Bumrah’s importance to India in all formats, particularly with the Champions Trophy and England tour, the management is likely to adopt a cautious approach to ensure he doesn’t return prematurely. The focus will be on his long-term fitness rather than rushing him back into competitive cricket.
Sources also said that Bumrah is resting and his back is getting better. He is also not doing any gym or training. “Right after the scan report comes out, which is likely to be positive, Bumrah will join the team for the last ODI in Ahmedabad,” the source said.
It is also revealed that Bumrah may not play the third ODI against England and is expected to be with the team for the Champions Trophy which gets underway from the middle of February.
