Despite Shubman Gill emerging as the front-runner to lead India in the upcoming Test series against England, Jasprit Bumrah is not out of contention, sources in the BCCI told CricBlogger. The selectors view Gill as the preferred long-term option, but Bumrah remains a strong candidate, particularly for the initial part of the England tour, as long as he is fit and raring to go.
“The selectors have shortlisted three candidates, with Gill leading the race, followed by Bumrah and Rahul,” a top BCCI official told CricBlogger. The decision, according to the official, is expected to be finalised after further consultation with the team management and coach Gautam Gambhir.
Sources added that Bumrah, who led India in two Tests in Australia and served as vice-captain throughout that series, has a strong case to be given the reins — at least for the first two Tests or so. KL Rahul is also considered part of the leadership group in the Test setup, offering the team flexibility depending on form and fitness.
Some selectors believe Bumrah’s experience, leadership temperament, and seniority warrant serious consideration, with Gill as a promising deputy who could gradually transition into the role.
Moreover, with the England series being far from child’s play, there is a growing belief among some selectors that a seasoned campaigner like Bumrah fits the bill better. His ability to handle pressure in challenging overseas conditions adds weight to his candidacy.
Meanwhile, the selectors are concerned about the IPL being extended by several days due to ongoing political tensions with Pakistan. The original plan was to send a group of Test probables with the India A team ahead of the England series to help them get acclimated to local conditions. However, the delay in the IPL schedule could disrupt those preparations and impact player workload management.
