Can semi-retired match officials break BCCI rules? Cricket board needs to tighten up its regulations

In the light of growing concern over the oversight and regulation of match officials in India, particularly with the rise of various domestic and international leagues, BCCI’s rule, which requires match officials to seek permission before accepting assignments from state T20 leagues or events like the Legends League, has raised the issue of implementation.

Some of the retired match officials, who are still on the BCCI payroll as mentors, are taking up assignments in leagues like the T10 in Zimbabwe and it raises questions about the enforcement of rules. It seems that either the officials may not be fully adhering to the new regulations, or there may be loopholes regarding retired officials who remain affiliated with the BCCI but are no longer actively involved in domestic tournaments.

Sources told CricBlogger that some of the current match officials have raised concerns over this dictum of BCCI when some are still openly flouting the rules and regulations. This situation could prompt the BCCI to tighten its regulations further, ensuring that all officials, active or semi-retired, follow the same protocol to maintain consistency and transparency. It may also lead to a review of how retired officials are managed if they are still on the payroll, to avoid any potential issues with overlapping commitments.

Such leagues, including the T10 format, are growing in popularity, but they also raise concerns about workload, conflict of interest, and maintaining the integrity of match officiating across various competitions. The BCCI’s challenge will be to strike a balance between giving officials’ opportunities to work in different leagues and ensuring that these engagements do not compromise their commitments to the board. Further action or clarification from the BCCI may be needed to address this issue.

On the contrary, how can a retired match official be stopped if he isn’t in the pay-roll of BCCI or state association. “This confusion has to be tackled and BCCI will have to specify each and every rule rather than having biases,” a match official said on the condition of anonymity.
