Reacting to India’s T20 performances against Ireland and England, former chief selector MSK Prasad said RCB captain Rajat Patidar should have been part of India’s squad for the three-match T20 assignments.
“Rajat deserves a place,” Prasad told CricBlogger. “He should have at least been picked for the Zimbabwe series.”
Prasad’s remarks reignite the debate over India’s selection policy. If the IPL remains the benchmark—as repeatedly emphasised by head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar—Patidar has built a compelling case for national selection with his performances as both captain and batter.
“Rajat is a match-winner. He plays proper cricketing shots and adapts to different match situations with ease. He handled both spin and pace with equal competence,” Prasad added.
The current Indian T20 side has struggled to make an impact since lifting the T20 World Cup, failing to register a series win. Consecutive series defeats to Ireland and England have reignited the debate over whether some members of the current squad have done enough to justify their places. With questions being raised over the selection policy, the pressure is now firmly on the selectors and team management to identify the right combination before the next major ICC tournament.
