Ahead of the IPL, no one would have backed Shivam Dube to play for India in the T20 World Cup. No one would have imagined Dube surging ahead of Rinku Singh in the T20 15-member team. But it all happened. Thanks to his Mumbai connection. His ability to bowl one or two overs in T20 matches gave him an extra edge over Rinku.
Otherwise, Rinku is a far better choice than Dube, at least, some of the pundits of the game are echoing this sentiment.
Former Indian cricketer Karsan Ghavri also believes that both Dube and Rinku are game-changers, but still, the Mumbai cricketer got ahead of the UP player because of his ability to bowl a few overs.
But with the bat, Dube is yet to fire. “Rohit Sharma could be better off with Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order,” Ghavri said while explaining that the team management is in the best position to determine whether Dube is worth the money.
“For sure, Dube’s fielding is not good. There is a question mark there,” Ghavri, who stays in Mumbai, said.
So, Rinku is a batsman who can field but can’t roll his arm at the highest level, while Dube is a batsman who can’t field but can bowl. The selectors have already made their choice. It doesn’t matter what MS Dhoni, who was Dube’s captain in franchise cricket, thinks about it.
On slow tracks, Dube isn’t comfortable. It has been proven time and again. It is now up to team management to decide whether Dube is good to go and play all games for India.
