The sentiment within the Indian team management, sources told CricBlogger, is that Rohit Sharma should step aside on his own and allow others to take over. However, as long as Rohit continues to score runs and remains fit, neither the team management nor head coach Gautam Gambhir has any issue with his place in the side.
“Shouldn’t he retire?” a source close to the team management asked CricBlogger, before adding: “There are others waiting for an opportunity to break into the team, and technically he should make way for them. What’s the point of carrying on like this? Rohit has to accept that Gambhir is more powerful than him in the Indian dressing room today.”
There is also a growing belief that if Rohit does not step aside voluntarily, he could eventually face the prospect of being dropped from the ODI side. A similar situation unfolded after India’s triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy, when he was overlooked for the captaincy, and later found himself forced into an unceremonious exit from Test cricket.
Within certain circles, the feeling is that stepping away on his own terms would allow Rohit to retain control of the narrative rather than risk a situation where the decision is made for him.
The bigger concern revolves around his fitness. Given his history of hamstring troubles, questions remain over whether he can withstand the physical demands of a full 50-over match. Rohit was seen spending limited time on the field even during the IPL for the Mumbai Indians, raising doubts about his ability to remain on the park for an entire ODI.
Having worked under experienced physiotherapist Nitin Patel for nearly two months, Rohit still appeared to be struggling with fitness issues. If he is suddenly deemed fit enough to play against Afghanistan, it is bound to raise questions. There appears to be more to the situation than meets the eye.
Rohit’s strained relationship with Gambhir is not helping his cause either. In contrast, Virat Kohli has continued to demonstrate both fitness and form, reinforcing the belief within the team setup that he still has a significant role to play.
Rohit, however, appears to be struggling to fit into the long-term plans. With concerns over his fitness persisting and age increasingly becoming a factor, the perception within certain sections of the management is that time may finally be catching up with him. As he approaches 40, questions about his ability to meet the physical demands of international cricket are becoming harder to ignore.
