The whole of Asia is now looking to Rajeev Shukla to break the ice with his Pakistani counterpart and move forward with preparations for the Asia Cup scheduled this September. Pakistan has deliberately kept the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Bangladesh, fully aware that India is unlikely to attend due to the ongoing political unrest in that nation. This has caused considerable concern among other ACC members, who fear a breakdown in planning.
It is widely understood that the future of the Men’s Asia Cup cannot be decided without the active participation of the BCCI. With tensions mounting and time running out, the need for high-level diplomatic cricketing engagement is more urgent than ever.
Originally scheduled to be held from September 5 to 21, the Asia Cup 2025 now finds itself in a state of uncertainty. Given the current diplomatic impasse, the entire tournament hangs in the balance.
With Shukla at the helm, not only does he hold a key leadership position within Indian cricket, but he also carries the crucial responsibility of securing government clearance and navigating the complex political landscape surrounding the tournament. Rajeev Shukla has a long standing relationship with Mohsin Naqvi and both of them carry excellent rapport between them.
Amidst this, Shukla’s recent meeting with King Charles in London has added an element of diplomatic visibility. Meanwhile, countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka — both major stakeholders in the tournament — are increasingly leaning on India’s leadership, rather than placing their trust in the current ACC chairperson from Pakistan.
As Pakistan continues to delay the convening of an ACC meeting, ostensibly due to India’s likely non-attendance in politically tense Bangladesh, the fate of the Asia Cup appears to rest largely on whether India re-engages — and whether Shukla can diplomatically break the deadlock. It is a known fact in cricketing circles that Rajeev Shukla given his equation with ICC Chairman will replace Roger Binny as the next BCCI President.
It will be interesting to note the outcome! Either way, Pakistanis are pathetic if they loose a match. However, one always enjoys a good match!
Sports Diplomacy and Politics have gone hand in hand on many occasions especially for good .There is no doubt amongst Sports and Political Purists that Sports plays an excellent platform bridging divides amongst nations especially sporting competitive nations and bringing humanity and nations together even as tensions and issues continue to plague this planet .Be it the Ping Pong India Chinese Table Tennis Diplomacy in wake of 1962 Indo China War or Pak players not playing in IPL due to Pak role linked to supporting Terrorism , there would still be many across both the borders hoping that hostilities and tensions are resolved for good even though it may not be possible due to varied factors .India Pak cricket no doubt and in the context of Asia Cup is a duel everyone would love to witness irrespective of the undercurrents of political and diplomacy tussles and tug of wars .There are sometimes that between nations and historic occasions leaders rise to and above and take historic and well meaning decisions in the interest of all .Having been involved with Indian Cricket for approx 2 decades its probably time for Mr Rajeev Shukla to finally rise as a Unicorn as he slowly but surely moves into the BCCI President role .Let Cricket and Humanity be the winner but never at the cost of innocent human lives being lost due to Terrorism or support to Terrorism and for this the ball will be always be in Pak court till they shelve their foreign and domestic policy towards Jammu and Kashmir
