The saying “first impression is the last impression” often holds some truth, especially in high-pressure environments like cricket, where initial perceptions can shape a player’s or coach’s reputation. However, it isn’t always definitive. Gautam Gambhir, as India’s new head coach, faces the challenge of stepping into the large shoes left by Rahul Dravid, who has made significant contributions to Indian cricket both as a player and as a coach.
Dravid is widely respected for his calm demeanour and his success in nurturing young talent has put him on a high pedestal. His influence on the Indian team has been profound. Comparatively, Gambhir is known for his aggressive and passionate approach, which could be a double-edged sword. While he may bring a fresh perspective and instil a strong winning mentality, it will take time for him to establish the same level of trust and respect that Dravid commands.
Clearly, the transition from Dravid to Gambhir as head coach is still in its early stages, and the players are adjusting to the change. Dravid’s legacy as “The Wall” extended beyond his playing days, as he was known for being approachable and providing unwavering support to all players, regardless of their status in the team. This created a familial atmosphere where players felt secure and valued, knowing they had someone they could rely on.
Gambhir, on the other hand, is still establishing his presence and hasn’t yet fostered the same level of comfort and trust that Dravid did. The players’ current neutral stance toward Gambhir suggests that while they are not resistant to his leadership, they haven’t fully embraced it either.
This could be due to the stark contrast in their personalities and coaching styles—Dravid’s calm and supportive approach versus Gambhir’s more intense and demanding demeanor. Including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the ODI series against Sri Lanka could indeed be a strategic move by Gambhir to bridge any gap or tension that might exist between him and the senior players.
Given the influence and experience of Kohli and Sharma, their relationship with the new coach is crucial for maintaining harmony and ensuring the team’s success. By having them participate in this series, Gambhir may be aiming to establish a working relationship, address any concerns, and align their goals. It’s also an opportunity for the senior players to understand Gambhir’s approach to demonstrate greater co-ordination.
