Why are half-fit players allowed to play IPL?
India’s fast bowling senstation Mayank Yadav, who missed a major chunk of the IPL this season because of foot and back injuries, has been recommended for a lower-back surgery in New Zealand by the Indian cricket board, BCCI sources told CricBlogger. Mayank had played just two matches for Lucknow Super Giants and grabbed two wickets before being ruled out of the competition.
The 22-year-old speedster had regularly clocked over 150 km/h and was seen as a breakout star for India’s fast-bowling future.
With the surgery now being considered overseas, it’s clear the BCCI is taking a long-term view on preserving Mayank’s career and managing his recovery with the best available care.
However, it is still a concern over the way the Indian fast bowlers are treated at the National Cricket Academy. If Mayank was half fit, why was he allowed to take part in this year’s IPL. The fact that Mayank is becoming almost like IPL-to-IPL player should be a concern for BCCI. “How can he be allowed to play with a recurring back injury like this?” a source asked.
