Indian coach Gautam Gambhir did not want Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant in the Champions Trophy team and had to face a barrage of question from the selectors before the 15-member squad was picked, sources told CricBlogger. It is revealed that Gambhir wanted Tilak Verma in the team in place of Iyer and batted for KL Rahul as the first choice wicket-keeper in the playing XI even in the selection meeting.
Sources said that when Gambhir pitched for Tilak, selection committee wanted to know the reason for it. Gambhir couldn’t give a satisfactory reply ’s reply, while the selectors hailed Shreyas for his comeback after losing his BCCI contract and fighting against all odds. “The selection committee was surprised to hear Gambhir taking about Tilak,” a BCCI source told CricBlogger.
None of the board officials were available for comments.
Sources also said that the selectors were also surprised to see Gambhir opting over KL and even asking them not to consider having Pant in the squad. It was clear whom Gambhir wanted as a second batter-cum-wicket-keeper in the team but “he certainly didn’t want Pant”. There is also some history between Gambhir and Pant when both were playing for Delhi and they don’t share a great rapport.
Sources also said that Gambhir doesn’t prefer Pant because he doesn’t have great numbers in white ball cricket and should have established himself in the two formats by this time, which any other player could have done during that time frame. Gambhir even spoke about Rahul as India’s top choice as wicket-keeping batter choice for the Champions Trophy over Pant.
Gambhir also publicly expressed confidence in Iyer’s role within the team. Following a wonderful series against England, Gambhir clarified that Shreyas was always considered a vital player in India’s plans for the Champions Trophy. He stated, “We always knew that Shreyas was going to be an important player for us.”
Whereas, in reality, Shreyas didn’t know that he was in the team’s plan for the India-England series, which means that there was a lack of communication within the team. It’s important to note that team selection involves multiple stakeholders, including the head coach, selectors, and team management. While there may be differing opinions during the selection process, the final squad is typically a collective decision aimed at fielding the most competitive team.
