With Suryakumar Yadav still on the road to recovery, there could be a close contest between Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya for the captaincy of India’s T20 team in the upcoming Asia Cup, sources have told CricBlogger. While the chief selector is believed to be leaning slightly in favour of Gill, Hardik Pandya remains a strong contender owing to his proven track record and impactful performances in white-ball cricket over the years.
Given Ajit Agarkar’s history of backing Shubman Gill — including naming him vice-captain in T20Is in the past — it remains to be seen whether Hardik can muster enough support to stake his claim for the T20 captaincy.
Source also said that Gill if and when named the captain of the T20 team is a stop-gap arraignment because of his captaincy skills in recent India-England Test series.
While former India captain Kapil Dev has publicly thrown his weight behind Hardik as the ideal candidate to lead India in white-ball cricket, Gill has emerged as the toast of the season — impressing the selectors with his consistency, maturity, and leadership potential. Gill’s recent performances, coupled with his calm demeanor and backing from key figures within the BCCI, have positioned him as a serious contender for the T20 captaincy despite the buzz around Hardik’s credentials.
