The political and security situation often influences decisions regarding international sporting events. Given the ongoing tensions and security concerns in Kashmir, the BCCI’s preference to avoid sending the Indian cricket team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy is understandable. If the BCCI pushes for the event to be relocated, hosting it in the Middle East could be a viable compromise, allowing Pakistan to remain the official host while ensuring a safer environment for the teams involved.
Although the board isn’t officially revealing much about this sensitive move, it is moving toward this sort of arrangement only. Last time too, India didn’t play the Asia Cup in Pakistan and forced the Asian Cricket Council to stage the event on a hybrid basis. It was partially played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with the India versus Pakistan matches held in Sri Lanka.
The BCCI’s decision to agree to the hybrid model for the Asia Cup was partly influenced by the need to ensure Pakistan’s participation in the 2023 World Cup in India. Despite the successful hosting of the World Cup, the current situation makes it impractical for India to play in Pakistan. A source emphasized that hosting an ICC event across two countries would pose significant logistical challenges, further supporting the case for relocating the Champions Trophy to a single, neutral venue.
The reluctance of senior Indian cricketers to play in Pakistan, combined with Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach and his known stance towards Pakistan, further diminishes the likelihood of India participating in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Gambhir’s influence, coupled with the existing security concerns and political tensions, makes it highly improbable that the Indian team will travel to Pakistan for the tournament. The BCCI and other stakeholders will likely continue to push for alternative arrangements, such as hosting the event in a more neutral and secure location.
As per the draft schedule framed by the Pakistan Cricket Board, the event is supposed to be held between February 19 and March 9, 2025. Pakistan is set to host an ICC event after 28 years. The Indian team is supposed to play all its matches in Lahore for security reasons, with the all-important India vs. Pakistan match scheduled for March 1 in Lahore. Meanwhile, the PCB has denied taking the Champions Trophy outside their country. Whether or not it will be played in Pakistan remains a matter of conjecture, but India playing Pakistan in Lahore is completely out of the picture.
