Who is the big boss of BCCI in the absence of its former secretary Jay Shah, who is now the ICC Chairman? While Devajit Saikia manages the day-to-day operations as the BCCI secretary and Roger Binny provides overarching governance as president, but vice-president Rajeev Shukla’s deep-rooted experience and strategic insights is playing a pivotal role in the board’s fuctioning. So much so that Shukla is now the BCCI boss.
Friday’s BCCI press release, which said that Shukla would be representing the board at the Asian Cricket Council in place of Shah means he has emerged as the go-to-man in Indian cricket. A recent BCCI meeting in February said it all. Sources said that board received a request from Indian coach Gauram Gambhir to grant permission for his private assistant Gaurav Arora to travel with him during tours.
Sources said that Saikia sided with Gambhir and didn’t see a problem with the proposal but Shukla vetoed it. Shukla is a seasoned cricket administrator and politician, having held various key positions within the BCCI, including serving as the Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shukla put his foot down and said that there isn’t any rule in the BCCI to allow the PA of a coach to travel with the team.
With his extensive experience and longstanding involvement in cricket administration, he practically overruled Saikia. Some of the working committee members are confused and are asking if Shukla is taking these calls with cricket operations, why isn’t he the secretary of BCCI? When CricBlogger spoke to Shukla, he only said that a team of office-bearers are running the show and not he alone.
