Don’t get carried away by the flood of hundreds this IPL. Don’t be distracted by the avalanche of fours and sixes, or even the chatter around dropped catches. There’s enough noise in the air already — but beneath it all lies the real story of the season: the invincibility of Punjab Kings and the brilliance of Shreyas Iyer.
Forget the hype around the young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or even the enduring aura of Virat Kohli. If you want to understand how to build an innings, how to pace a chase under pressure — look no further.
Shreyas Iyer is setting the template.
Don’t lose sleep over the two dropped catches he survived en route to a match-winning knock against Delhi Capitals on Saturday. What matters is the bigger picture — Shreyas is showing everyone how white-ball cricket is meant to be played.
Unlike last year’s IPL final against Royal Challengers Bangalore, where Shreyas Iyer perished early while attempting a side stroke, this season tells a very different story.
This time, he is building his innings the right way — starting cautiously, rotating strike with ones and twos, and settling in. After the first 10-odd deliveries, he shifts gears with precision. And once he does, there’s no looking back.
The impact of Shreyas has been so profound that Suryakumar Yadav has already lost the T20 captaincy race to him on social media. So strong is Shreyas’ influence right now that the Indian team management might well write his name first on the team sheet — and then think about the rest of the ten players.
Is that the reason why Shreyas Iyer carries such conviction? Last year’s IPL told a very different story. Back then, the selectors were keen to mould him into a more traditional Test-match template — even with an eye on the England series — asking him to curb his strokeplay, play safe and stay within a set structure. But Shreyas never quite bought into that idea. For him, attacking the cricket ball has always been the best form of defence. This year, though, he looks far more complete — not just aggressive, but assured, composed and mature.

Truly said Dada….day by day Shrey is getting polished to shine like a kohinoor
