Winning the 2024 IPL trophy should have been the crowning moment for Shreyas Iyer as captain of Kolkata Knight Riders. Instead, it was mentor Gautam Gambhir who walked away with most of the credit, overshadowing Iyer’s leadership role. That, sources told CricBlogger, may well have been the starting point of friction between the two.
Since then, Iyer has not been in Gambhir’s good books, a situation that nearly cost him his place in the Champions Trophy squad, where only chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s intervention secured his selection. Now, with the Asia Cup squad announced just months before the T20 World Cup at home, Iyer finds himself out of the Indian T20 team.
The decision is being read in cricketing circles as more than just a tactical call — it reflects the soured relationship that developed between Gambhir and Iyer after KKR’s title win. When CricBlogger tried to reach out to Gambhir and Iyer, both were unavailable for comments.
For a batter, who has delivered a stellar IPL season and shown tremendous ODI form, such a snub is telling. It suggests that beyond statistics and performances, personal equations and perceptions are beginning to play a decisive role in shaping India’s squads.
According to insiders, Iyer was quite vocal within his circle. He had pointed out that the narrative projected by the management was as if they had done everything and sidelined the players’ efforts. “Iyer did not hide his displeasure over how Gambhir and Co. walked away with most of the credit after KKR’s 2024 IPL triumph,” a source said.
Word of this dissatisfaction soon reached Gambhir, even before he officially took charge as India’s head coach. That was enough to strain their working relationship. “From then on, there has been a clear tussle between the two,” a source added. Truly, what could have been just a passing disagreement has now spiralled into a trust deficit!

It always sad then when such equations come into the picture .It’s clear with GG as a Coach in terms of selections and if he is not happy with any player for any reasons cricketing or non cricketing he will have his say and decision for sure .That’s the way if certainly seems to be going past in the few months starting from non selection of Sarfaraz due to his sad media leaks of dressing room talks , selection / non selection / retirement of Virat and Rohit in Tests and latest of Iyers selection .it’s better to have specialized players exclusively for different formats in my view and the current T20 reflects that except Shubham Gill coming in at expense of Iyer for reasons enumerated above .Real as it can get .
