Although the road to redemption at the highest level looks next to impossible, Indian captain Rohit Sharma doesn’t want to give up as yet. Sources told CricBlogger that Rohit’s team would be negotiating contracts with his sponsors for the next few years as a regular player. Even if and when he walks out of international cricket, he may plan to continue playing IPL like MS Dhoni if not playing the next 2027 50-over World Cup in South Africa.
Sources said that Rohit won’t be playing Test cricket anymore after he was dropped from the playing XI in the last and fifth Test match against Australia in Sydney and his retirement from T20 cricket has ensured that by just playing ODI cricket, he can’t continue at the highest level.
However, the board sources indicated that Rohit is made the captain on condition that he would retire from international cricket right after the Champions Trophy or after the IPL. Rohit has been the subject of retirement speculations due to a prolonged dip in form in Test cricket.
Despite these rumours, Rohit has firmly denied any immediate plans to retire from international cricket. “This decision is not a retirement decision nor am I going to take myself out of the game,” he had said clearly during the Sydney Test. Beyond his on-field commitments, Rohit remains a prominent figure in the endorsement landscape.
As of 2024, he has collaborated with over 24 brands, including Adidas, Oakley, and La Liga, commanding expensive endorsement deal. In June 2024, Rohit expanded his brand associations by partnering with BMO as their Global Cricket Ambassador, ahead of the Cricket World Cup held in North America and the West Indies.
This collaboration shows his global appeal and marketability. “Even after retirement, he will still be continuing as brand ambassador for different brands because of his mass appeal,” the source added.
