The fall-out of the deluge of runs scored in IPL 2024 is that the size of the boundary could be increased from next season onwards. Sources indicated that IPL teams have suggested that bigger boundaries could be one of the solutions to stop high-scoring games that are making the IPL matches so batter-centric.
It is not official but the IPL teams are speaking about it and it will be discussed once the IPL is over.
With teams based out of Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai having smaller boundaries and high-scoring matches ruling the roost, a section of IPL isn’t sure how the increased size boundaries, which are eye-marked below 60 meters, could stop the flow of sixes.
Limited spaces left for the stage for cheerleaders could see another 3 to 4-meter increase in boundary size, but will that help the cause?
Sources suggested that even a slight increase in boundary sizes could impact the thinking of the batters, who are fearless otherwise.
The ongoing season has earned the distinction of witnessing the maximum sixes in the history of IPL, and the tournament isn’t over.
“This concern will have to be addressed by the IPL management, and IPL GC has to find a way out,” a source told CricBlogger.
It is also like a catch-22 situation for the Indian board officials.
Whether runs come or not, IPL matches can’t be high-scoring or low-scoring. Both are a problem. It is like Virat Kohli’s batting in T20 — whether he scores runs or not, critics will still question his strike-rate!
