Rohit Sharma has suffered a 16-mm grade 3 hamstring tear that could put his participation in all the scheduled ODI matches leading up to the 2027 World Cup at risk, sources told CricBlogger. The injury is expected to require careful management, meaning Rohit will need to balance rehabilitation, rest, and workload management before featuring in high-intensity matches.
“A Grade 3 hamstring tear is the most severe form of hamstring injury. It indicates a complete tear or rupture of the hamstring muscle or tendon, resulting in a significant loss of function,” a source explained.
Surprisingly, BCCI’s centre of excellence has been declaring him fit to play matches and from here on whether he would have to pick and choose matches based on his fibre isn’t made clear. However, sources said that 100 per cent fitness could be an impossible task and there could be always a chance or missing him on key matches due to this hamstring injury.
Injuries of this magnitude typically require three to six months of recovery, and in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to ensure proper healing. The only positive aspect of Rohit’s injury is that he has managed it reasonably well over the years. “There won’t be any problem whatsoever,” a source close to Rohit said.
However, with the team management — and even some members of the selection committee — increasingly prioritising fitness and form over reputation, Rohit could find it difficult to secure a place in next year’s World Cup squad amid mounting expectations. He has already missed a few IPL matches this season because of the hamstring issue, an injury that has troubled him intermittently since the 2017–18 season.
While Rohit has continued to perform despite the setback, the lingering concern is whether his body will allow him to cope with the demands of international cricket all the way through to the 2027 World Cup.
