Former Indian stumper and commentator Deep Dasgupta makes a valid point — batting KL Rahul at No. 6 seems like a misfit, especially when Rishabh Pant is available and has the game to thrive in that position. “Rahul is at his best when batting higher up the order, where he can pace his innings rather than playing the role at No. 6,” Dasgupta told CricBlogger.

Then he explained: “If India is looking for a left-hander at No. 5, and Axar Patel is filling that role, then having Pant at No. 6 makes more sense. He brings the X-factor, the ability to counterattack, and can accelerate the innings, which is exactly what’s needed in that spot.”

On the other hand, Rahul is more suited for a top-order role, and if he can’t fit into the top four, then his place in the XI becomes questionable. The current batting order looks settled with Virat Kohli at 3, Shreyas Iyer at 4, and Yashasvi Jaiswal not in the mix. So, flexibility in the middle order is key.

Pant is a proven match-winner and has played some of the most memorable innings for India. But his lack of consistency in white-ball cricket has often gone against him, which is why he hasn’t been able to cement a regular spot despite his talent.

Dasgupta’s suggestion about Pant at No. 6 makes sense because he has the ability to accelerate the innings, play fearless cricket, and take on bowlers in the death overs. He could be the X-factor in that role if backed properly. “Consistency remains the key,” Dasgupta said while hinting that if Pant can find a way to convert his starts more often, he would be an automatic pick in India’s XI.
