The decision to host IPL playoff games — specifically Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator — in Chandigarh has drawn attention not only for logistical or weather-related concerns, but also for the potential geopolitical undertones. According to sources. the move was intended to send a “bold statement” to Pakistan, showcasing that India is confident and unafraid to stage high-profile sporting events even in areas relatively close to the international border.

While the BCCI and IPL governing bodies generally emphasize sporting and logistical considerations in venue selection (like crowd support, infrastructure, and regional representation), this claim suggests an added layer of symbolic assertion tied to national sentiment and security confidence.

“Weather was a deciding factor but staging a match within 250 km away from Pakistan border also tells a story about India’s confidence,” a top BCCI official told CricBlogger.

Originally, the first two playoff matches were supposed to be held in Hyderabad. However, a one-week delay in the schedule disrupted those plans, ultimately spoiling Hyderabad’s chance to host the initial playoff games. The delay also affected Kolkata’s opportunity to host the IPL final and Qualifier 2, which had been part of the initial venue considerations.

Earlier, the IPL was briefly stalled following a shelling exchange between India and Pakistan. One of the league matches in Dharamshala was abruptly halted due to a missile threat looming large in the bordering states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
