Rohit Sharma’s decision to opt out of the Sydney Test against Australia looks controversial but it has found praise from atleast one Indian great.
Former Indian captain and star all-rounder Kapil Dev sees the decision as a positive one because of the good intentions for the national team. “You have to respect Rohit’s decision to opt out when he is not scoring. It’s a brave call and I haven’t seen anyone doing this. There is always a first time,” Kapil told CricBlogger exclusively on Friday.
Won’t Rohit lose self respect after this call? “I don’t know what happened inside the Indian camp. There is no question of losing self respect. You got to take it positively if the captain is moving aside for the sake of his team,” Kapil said.
Won’t Rohit ever play a Test for India again? “I am not a selector to decide whether he is going to play Test cricket for India or not. But we can only hope for the best for a cricketer of his stature,” Kapil said while adding that having a positive intent is the only way out to play this game.
Eventually, Rohit not playing at the top in Sydney Test didn’t help India much, as the visitors lost their top three batters — KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill — with not much on the board. Whether it will impact India cricket in the long run is something only time can answer.
