Rishabh Pant is all set to be announced as captain of the Lucknow Supergiants at a gala event in Kolkata, sources told CticBlogger on Saturday. Pant’s leadership qualities were evident during his time with Delhi Capitals, and this could be a great opportunity for him to make a mark with Lucknow. Earlier, LSG bought Pant for a whopping Rs 27 crore at the auction. He was also the highest paid cricketer at the auction.
Even before the auction, Pant’s leadership and potential were quite in demand, but coach Ricky Ponting’s reservations about him at Punjab Kings show how pivotal captaincy decisions can be. Ponting, known for his sharp cricketing mind, might have felt that Pant’s style wasn’t the right fit for Punjab, or perhaps he had concerns over his consistency or temperament in high-pressure situations.
On the other hand, Lucknow Supergiants clearly saw something in Pant that made them confident he would be a great leader. Their decision to back him fully, even going “all out” during the auction, suggests they’re invested in his potential to guide the team forward. With his aggressive batting and ability to read situations, he could bring a refreshing, dynamic energy to Lucknow’s campaign.
It’ll be interesting to see how he fits into the team and whether his leadership can take Lucknow to greater heights. Already, Pant is in the leadership mix of the Indian team and it’s only some consistency that can change his fortunes forever.
