The BCCI appears to be brewing with significant political undercurrents as the board prepares to elect its new secretary and treasurer. With Jay Shah stepping down from the secretary’s post and Ashish Shelar vacating the treasurer’s post after becoming a Maharashtra minister, the race for key positions has intensified.
The front-runner for the secretary’s position seems to be Devajit Saikia, the interim secretary, who is backed by Assam Chief Minister Hemanta Sarma. However, the more contentious battle seems to be over the treasurer’s position, with sources indicating a struggle between two powerful figures: Sourav Ganguly and Abhishek Dalmiya.
BCCI had initially favored Dalmiya, the former president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), as a potential candidate for the treasurer’s role. But Ganguly, a former BCCI president, wants his brother, Snehasish Ganguly, to be included in the electoral list for the CAB, which has led to tensions. This dispute is further complicated by the absence of CAB’s name and its candidate from the draft electoral list, raising suspicions of a power play within the board.
Sources suggest that the conflict between Ganguly and Dalmiya could evolve into a full-fledged political battle, especially in Kolkata, where the two are influential figures. As the BCCI’s AGM is scheduled for next year, it seems the treasurer’s post will continue to be a point of contention, with the final outcome remaining uncertain.
In short, while Saikia might hold the secretary’s position for now, the battle for the treasurer’s role is far from settled, and it could set the stage for further political maneuvering within Indian cricket. With only the nominated representative allowed to vote and take part in the by-elections, the battle-lines are already drawn!
