The victory of Yamunapaar (East Delhi) over South Delhi in the inaugural T20 Delhi Premier League (DPL) final at the Ferozeshah Kotla was a defining moment, symbolising more than just cricketing skill—it was a celebration of local pride that transcended geographical and social divides. While becoming part of the prestigious South Delhi circle may be a distant dream for many, on the cricket field, Yamunapaar seized the spotlight, winning the title and proving that talent can emerge from any corner of the city.
The atmosphere was electric, with the triumph creating an overwhelming sense of euphoria at the DDCA. The guest list read like a who’s who of Delhi’s cricket and administrative elite. Among the attendees were DDCA president Rohan Jaitley, his family members including Sangeeta Jaitley (his mother), Sonali (his sister), and Meherunnisa (his wife), as well as league commissioner Bimal Jhulka, DDCA joint secretary Rajen Manchanda, interim DDCA CEO RR Singh, and former DDCA treasurer Ravinder Manchanda.
From the cricketing world, Indian coach Gautam Gambhir,, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, and ex-cricketer Surender Khanna were also present, enhancing the celebratory mood. When asked about his views on the DPL, Gambhir offered a cryptic response: “I haven’t come to DDCA for the first time,” implying that his presence speaks to his deep connection with Delhi cricket.
However, he refrained from saying much more, especially as South Delhi were fighting it out there. The match took a dramatic turn when South Delhi’s captain, Ayush Badoni, bowled the last over and conceded five consecutive sixes to Mayank Rawat ensuring a psychological advantage for East Delhi. Had it not been for this over, the outcome could have been vastly different.
South Delhi who lost to North in the women’s final had ample opportunity to make amend in the men’s final. Badoni’s men had to make 19 runs from last over with one wicket in hand but it was East that had the last laugh. It was like an IPL final played in front of 25K spectator. This win was not just about sporting success—it was a moment of immense pride for East Delhi and a statement that talent is flourishing across the entire Delhi region. The presence of such influential figures made the celebration a significant occasion, marking this victory as a historic moment in Delhi’s cricketing legacy.
